Side Effects and Safety
The most common side effects of semaglutide are gastrointestinal in nature. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation may occur initially but often resolve within 4-8 weeks. To minimize stomach upset, we have tips like:
- Drink more fluids
- Eat smaller, high-protein meals
- Take over-the-counter nausea remedies
Rarely, semaglutide can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). This is more likely if you take other diabetes medications. We'll monitor you for symptoms like shakiness, sweating, confusion, and irritability.
Semaglutide may elevate enzymes from your pancreas or liver. For that reason, your doctor will order lab tests to check these levels routinely during treatment.
In clinical trials, semaglutide did not appear to increase rates of thyroid cancer. However, it should be used very cautiously in anyone with a personal/family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma.
In summary, semaglutide has an excellent safety profile with relatively low risk when taken correctly under a doctor's care. At our clinic, your health is our top priority!
